Science City is a 24 acre City Centre site, originally occupied by Newcastle Breweries, and is being delivered by a longterm partnership between Newcastle University and Newcastle City Council. The Core, designed by Faulkner Browns, was the first building to be completed on the site at a cost of £11.2m and opened on 3rd November 2014.
Said to have been: "Designed with new and growing knowledge-based businesses in mind, The Core is a place for collaboration, a place where people come together to share skills and knowledge, where ideas are generated and futures made. At the crossing point between research expertise and commercialisation, businesses based here will benefit from unique access to networks that could gain them crucial competitive advantage."
The Core has been designed with urban sustainability at its heart. Features include a four-storey living wall, bee hotels, planted sedum roofs, rainwater harvesting and a series of adjoining public squares.
The front of the award winning building is clad in gold anodised aluminium.
