Bedford Square and Princesshay, Exeter
Bedford Square and Princesshay, Exeter
Princesshay was the first pedestrian precinct to be built in the UK after WW2, when the area had been flattened by enemy bombing and subsequent demolitions. It was opened by Princess Elizabeth, later queen. The name comes from the combination of "princess" and "hay" meaning open space in Devon dialect. Exeter has open spaces named Southernhay and Northernhay. The original Princesshay was demolished and the present buildings erected with shops and apartments in the early 21st century. The glass seats in the foreground can be illuminated and house a few small plants inside.
