Grassmarket, Edinburgh (1982)
An area that has been slowly gentrified over the years since this photograph was taken in 1982. The empty beercans and huddle of meths-drinking hostelry inmates have given way to tourists sitting outdoors at pavement cafes and passers-by enjoying French syrup pancakes. There is now no surface clue to the existence of the subterranean public toilet seen here. Note the Civil Defence siren on the police box from the days of the three-minute* nuclear warning during the Cold War.
