St Michael's The Archangel Church
St Michael's The Archangel Church
St Michaelís the Archangel church occupies part of the site of the Roman fort, Petriana, which was built in AD122. A cavalry regiment of 1,000 men was garrisoned here near the western end of Hadrianís Wall for easy defence of the Solway Plain against the Picts and the Scots. A separate garrison was stationed at Luguvallum, south of the River Eden. The south & west walls of the churchyard mark the corner of the fort. The eastern boundary runs up Wells Lane.
