NS4275 : Dumbowie Hill: south-eastern summit

taken 5 years ago, near to Milton, West Dunbartonshire, Great Britain

Dumbowie Hill: south-eastern summit
Dumbowie Hill: south-eastern summit
The south-eastern peak is shown here, as viewed from the north-western one. Snow cover allows the basic form of the south-eastern peak to be revealed, without the distraction of uneven vegetation cover. That peak was the site of an Iron Age fortification, Dumbuie Dun, the antiquity that is marked on the map.

For pictures without snow, see NS4275 : Dumbowie Hill: south-eastern summit and the earlier NS4275 : Dumbowie Hill: south-eastern summit.

The hill originated as a volcanic plug, and the terraces on its slopes, apparent in this picture, may reflect either the underlying geology, human efforts to fortify the site, or some combination of the two: NS4275 : Dumbowie Hill: upper terrace / NS4275 : Dumbowie Hill: lower terrace / NS4275 : Dumbowie Hill: lower terrace.

For the summit area above those terraces, see NS4275 : Dumbuie Dun and NS4275 : Dumbuie Dun. That summit was the location of Dumbuie Dun. For more about the Dun, its excavation, and the resulting controversy, see NS4275 : Dumbuie Dun and NS4275 : Dumbuie Dun.

Part of NS4274 : Dumbuck Quarry is in the right background.
Dumbowie Hill
The hill originated as a volcanic plug on the edge of the Kilpatrick Hills plateau. The hill has two peaks (NW+SE); the south-eastern one has several terraces on its slopes, and the remains of an Iron Age fort, Dumbuie Dun, on top: see LinkExternal link (at Canmore) for archaeological details.
