TF8529 : Tattersett All Saints church

Tattersett All Saints church
Tattersett All Saints church
Also anciently known as Gatesend and appears to be in Coxford on the O.S. map. The 13th c. porch, which is among the earliest in the county, has large half-round columns either side of the doorway and is coeval with the building of the church. The parapet on the tower is brick, and I believe Tudor. Just inside the south door is a stoup set in brick, perhaps indicating crude Victorian restoration work. The chancel however has seen even more re-structuring. The piscina, which I think may be a small font bowl is set into a brick niche; the sedilia has had similar treatment. The top and bottom doorways to the long-gone rood loft remain open but a north doorway has been blocked for many centuries. A little further east of the door, the outline of an earlier Norman doorway can just be discerned.
