Dumbuie Dun
Dumbuie Dun
This is the south-eastern peak of Dumbowie Hill: NS4275 : Dumbowie Hill: south-eastern summit.

The flat area on the summit was the site of Dumbuie Dun, an Iron Age fort, the antiquity marked on the map. My main reason for returning was to capture some more successful wide-angle views of the site of the ancient fort than I had on previous visits.

For more about the Dun, its excavation, and the resulting controversy, see NS4275 : Dumbuie Dun and NS4275 : Dumbuie Dun.

Click on the end-note title for related pictures of the hill.

Most of the background is taken up by the edge of the Kilpatrick Hills, but a small part of the River Clyde can be seen on the right, and a part of NS4274 : Dumbuck Quarry at the far right.
Dumbowie Hill

The hill originated as a volcanic plug on the edge of the Kilpatrick Hills plateau. The hill has two peaks (NW+SE); the south-eastern one has several terraces on its slopes, and the remains of an Iron Age fort, Dumbuie Dun, on top: see LinkExternal link (at Canmore) for archaeological details. The names are equivalent: "Dumbowie" is pronounced "Dumbuie" (from the Gaelic for "yellow dun/fort", and probably referring to the gorse-covered slopes).
