SE0722 : Retaining wall below Dye House Lane

Retaining wall below Dye House Lane
Retaining wall below Dye House Lane
This is near to the unofficial diversion of Sowerby bridge FP85. It is surprising that it was considered worthwhile to build such a massive retaining wall in woodland, but the land above the wall was perhaps a field long ago, and the wall made it less steep. The 1850 six-inch map shows a track from here to Clough Road, although it did not connect to any other track at this point. The retaining wall might have been built to form a level area for the track rather than to alter the slope of the ground above the wall.
