Quarr Abbey
The monastic community of Solesmes were expelled from France in 1901 finding alternative homes in Belgium and on the Isle of Wight at Appledurcombe House before moving to Quarr in 1907. The Grade 1 listed monastic buildings and abbey were built in Flemish brick by a workforce of over 300 local craftsmen between 1907 and 1912 to the design one of the monks Dom Paul Bellot.
It is truly extraordinary brick building drawing on classical cathedrals and Moorish influences.
