Shere: St James' Church
The site of the cell of Christine Carpenter, Anchoress of Shere. She sought permission to be enclosed in a cell at the church in July 1329 and stayed there for three years. She could see only the altar through the squint window and received the Communion bread and wine through the quatrefoil. This was an act of great piety.
