The lighthouse boundary walls are Grade II Listed as the rest of the buildings that make up the lighthouse compound. The walls were possibly built with the lighthouse in 1828 but could be later. The two detached outhouses each containing 3 toilets and a pig-sty were built later probably 1875 like the oil-store built to a standard Trinity House design. The 17m tall lighthouse itself was built at a cost of 3,380 11s 7d by Joseph Nelson and a plaque on the building reads 'Erected A.D. 1828 by the Corporation of Trinity House and light exhibited for the benefit of navigation, January 26th 1829.' The lantern standing 65m above high water carries a plate stating 'Chance brothers and Co Ltd. lighthouse engineers and constructors near Birmingham' and seems to have been replaced possibly when the oil store and outhouses were built. The Lighthouse was converted to automatic operations in 1927. It was the last Trinity House lighthouse to be powered by acetylene gas, eventually being converted to electricity in November 1997 with a 50 Watt halogen lamp.
