The Woking Martian
The Woking Martian
Erected in 1998 to mark the centenary of the publication of H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds", this sculpture depicts one of the gleaming tripods in which Wells' Martians travel about the British landscape after landing on Horsell Common just north of Woking town centre. As the nearby plaque TQ0058 : The Woking Martian: explanatory plaque in the pavement explains, Woking can as a result be seen as the birthplace of modern science fiction.
In the background, the nose of a Hawker Hunter jet fighter protrudes round an office block: the fighter is mounted outside a former nightclub, for which it used to be a feature.
