Ashridge Estate - Two Fallow Deer (Dama dama)
Ashridge Estate - Two Fallow Deer (Dama dama)
Two Fallow Deer in the undergrowth of Ashridge Forest. There is a large herd of Fallow Deer which roams freely over the Ashridge Estate. Although Fallow Deer (Dama dama) are not truly native to Britain, they have been here for nearly a thousand years now, having been introduced by the Normans to provide a supply of fresh Venison for the nobility and for monasteries - such as the one that was established at Ashridge.
The Ashridge National Trust Estate :: SP9713
The Ashridge Estate covers a wide area of the Chiltern Hills on the Hertfordshire Buckinghamshire border, which provides open access to large woods and open grassland. There are many footpaths and bridleways - including part of the Ridgeway – and wonderful opportunities to observe wild life – including deer.
The Estate Office, Visitor Centre and Café are close to the Bridgewater Monument on Moneybury Hill, above the village of Aldbury.
