Cliff fall
Cliff fall
A recent cliff fall above Park Pit. A feature of this sand (part of the Folkestone Bed Lower Greensand, a very low iron and aluminium oxide sand which produces a very pure silica, suitable for glass making) is that it falls between a loose soil and solid sandstone in structure. As a result, whilst it is very solid in situ (and the unsupported caves under Reigate Castle a couple of miles to the east of here are testament to this), when it does collapse it does so mainly as loose sand.

For a wider view of this fall see TQ2250 : Cliff fall.

Park Pit ceased to operate as a sand quarry in 1990 but processing of sand from nearby Tapwood Pit continued until 2014. Plans are being considered for conversion of Park Pit for leisure use.

There is currently no public access to the site, this photo being taken on a private tour arranged for the Betchworth & Buckland Society.
