The site was redeveloped in 1904 for Mawson, Swan and Morgan, the booksellers, stationers, printers and picture frame makers (founded in 1878). The Edwardian shopfront was carefully repaired in 1986 when Waterstones acquired the building. Waterstones stayed here until 2007, despite having taken over Dillons in 1999 and keeping their (rebranded) bookshop less than 100 m away at NZ2464 : Emerson Chambers, Blackett Street (photographed by Andrew Curtis). For further information see LinkExternal link .

The building is Grade II listed LinkExternal link .

Sir Joseph Swan invented the incandescent light bulb (patented in 1878) - see NZ2564 : Commemorative plaque to Sir Joseph Swan (photographed by Andrew Curtis).

The Buildings of Grainger Town - No.3. See NZ2464 : The Earl Grey Monument, Grey Street, NE1.
