The Theatre Royal, Grey Street / Shakespeare Street, NE1
The Theatre Royal Newcastle was granted its Royal licence by King George III, and opened on Drury Lane off Mosley Street in 1788. The brick building, in a neat Georgian style, was demolished in 1836. See NZ2564 : 1 and 3 Grey Street, NE1.
In February 1837, shortly before Queen Victoria ascended the throne, the theatre moved to Grey Street, a flagship building in Grainger and Dobson’s famous city plan. It features what is generally regarded as the finest theatre façade in the UK, later combined with a fine 1901 auditorium by one of the great theatre architects, Frank Matcham, after the original interior had been destroyed by fire in 1899. The theatre underwent a major refurbishment and restoration in the latter part of the 1980s, reopening in January 1988. A major restoration of the auditorium, box office, bars and restaurant in 2011 restored the original 1901 Frank Matcham Edwardian interior. For further info, see the theatre's website Link
