TQ0543 : Hollow way leading down to Madgehole Farm

taken 10 years ago, near to Rowly, Surrey, England

Hollow way leading down to Madgehole Farm
Hollow way leading down to Madgehole Farm
Hollow ways are one of the most characteristic features of the Surrey Greensand hills, some incised to a depth of about 6m (or 20 feet). This one is narrow and less developed, but could still be of some antiquity, as it leads down to Madgehole Farm, which must have been settled for many centuries. The OS maps this as a bridleway, but I saw no evidence of recent hoofed traffic.
