These are rare reminders of a period between the wars when a combination of economic and social factors led to an explosion of unplanned residential development around the country. The effects led ultimately to the first major post-war town and country planning legislation. Most of these old railway carriages have long gone making this example quite important. Larger unplanned developments still exist such as Jaywick Sands in Essex and Peacehaven, East Sussex. A few years ago a highly readable book "Arcadia for All: The Legacy of a Makeshift Landscape" (ISBN: 9780907123590) was published and is an excellent analysis of the phenomenon. Worth visiting is the Haven Plotlands Museum in Essex for a feel for life in these makeshift dwellings.
