View southwards at this major and extremely busy junction on the ECML: this particular train will have come from London via Leeds and Harrogate, on its way to Glasgow via Newcastle and Edinburgh. The locomotive is Gresley A3 Pacific No. 60074 'Harvester', built as A1 No. 2573 in 10/24, rebuilt to A3 1938 and survived as No. 60074 until 4/63. As can be seen the main platforms here were in an island formation, and colour-light signalling was in use, dating from the 1933 transformation. The line forking right leads to the main line to Eaglescliffe and Tees-side.
