6-16 Nun Street, NE1
6-16 Nun Street, NE1
The name of the street comes from the 12th C Benedictine Nunnery that used to occupy the site on which this street and Grainger Market now stand. Nun Street is similar to Nelson Street in having a range of Grainger Market on one side, and an identical public house as a visual stop at its western end: see NZ2464 : The Duke of Northumberland, 18 Clayton Street, NE1 and NZ2464 : The (former) Lord Collingwood, 12A Clayton Street, NE1.

The south side of Nun Street was built c 1835, probably by John Wardle, for Richard Grainger. Nos. 6-16 are the central pavilion and the 8-bay section to its west; they are included in the Grade II listing for 6-30A Nun Street and the returns at 93 Grainger Street and 45 Clayton Street LinkExternal link .
