Built c 1837, probably by John Wardle, for Richard Grainger. The west side of Clayton Street between Newgate Street and Fenkle Street consists of 28 3-bay houses: (from north to south) a six-bay wing, a nine-bay link, and a six-bay pavilion, after which the rest of the houses are built in a continuous terrace, with slight changes in level and direction as the street falls gently to the south. The photo shows the southern end of the terrace. The buildings further to the north are shown in NZ2464 : 36-92 Clayton Street, NE1 (part), NZ2464 : 36-92 Clayton Street, NE1 (part) (2) and NZ2464 : 36-92 Clayton Street, NE1 (part) (3). The buildings are Grade II listed Link .
Newcastle's 'new' co-op was built on Newgate Street in 1932. Although 'art decor' in style, it gave more than a nod to Egypt where Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb had just taken place. See http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/newcastle_co-op.htm
