Sunken lanes like this are typical of the Surrey sandstone hills. Behind the camera - down towards the village - the maximum depth could be 25 or 30 feet in places. There are equally spectacular 'hollow ways' in the area between Wotton and Leith Hill - but those carry more traffic and you wouldn't choose to wander along them with a camera. Blackheath Lane is a dead-end, leading only to Postford Farm, so motor traffic is minimal.
