The Reading-Guildford-Redhill line is one of the few cross-country lines in south-east England - not part of the great radial pattern which has London at its hub. The line was built by the old South Eastern Railway. opened in 1849, and has never been electrified - presumably because it wasn't a London commuter route. It has to be counted a near-miracle that it escaped Dr Beeching's axe in the 1960's. I've said more about its history in connection with the station at Betchworth: Link
