River Thames, Black Potts Railway Bridge
River Thames, Black Potts Railway Bridge
Black Potts Railway Bridge carries the railway from London (Waterloo) to Windsor, across the River Thames on the reach above Old Windsor Lock, shortly before Romney Lock. The Staines to Windsor & Eton Line terminates immediately after the bridge at Windsor and Eton Riverside railway station. Originally the bridge, which opened in 1850, had ornate cast-iron ribs, but these corroded and were replaced with more utilitarian wrought iron girders, which radically altered the bridge's appearance.

Part of the segmental brick arch over the tow path at the Windsor end of the bridge can be seen on the right hand side of the photograph..
River Thames

The River Thames rises at Thames Head in Gloucestershire on the slopes of the Cotswolds and flows generally eastward to its mouth near Southend in Essex. At 215 miles long it is one of the longest rivers in Britain, and the longest entirely within England. It is one of the most important rivers in Britain. LinkExternal link
