Memorial to cyclists who fell in the Great War, The Green, Meriden
The Army Cycle Corps employed cyclists as scouts and messengers secret, vital and dangerous roles. "Theirs was a lonely life; theirs very often was a lonely death". The sombre memorial was unveiled by Lord Birkenhead, 21st May 1921, before a throng estimated at 15,000. Many had cycled there on that hot sunny Saturday. Meriden being in the 'Heart of England' and its popularity as a destination among Midlands' cyclists made it an appropriate location for this national memorial. Sadly, the modern-day setting of busy shops and on-street parking adds no dignity.
