Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix)
Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix)
Although sadly on the decline, black grouse can still be found locally in southern and central Scotland. These magnificent birds are best known for their courtship displays, where males perform at traditional 'lek' sites in order to attract the attentions of females. April is a particularly good month to look for the courting behaviour. When a lek is sited near a road, the birds can often be observed by using the car as a hide.
