NY8034 : Old mine remains at Lady Rake

taken 10 years ago, near to Harwood, County Durham, England

Old mine remains at Lady Rake
Old mine remains at Lady Rake
This is shown as Lady's Rake on the OS map, but a booklet on mining in the area names it as either Lady Rake, or simply Ladyrake. The iron pipe emerging from the ground is the head of the Cornish pump used to drain the mine, which appears to have been mainly a lead [galena] mine, but where sphalerite [zinc sulphide] was also found.
