Etruria: route of the Potteries Loop Line
This footpath between Hanley and Etruria is one of the few remaining identifiable sections of the Potteries Loop Line.
Potteries Loop Line
The Potteries Loop Line was a railway line serving the Six Towns of the Potteries in Staffordshire, which branched off from, and returned to, what is now a branch of the West Coast Main Line. Opened in sections between 1850 and 1875, it was renowned for its severe gradients and sharp curves, especially around Tunstall, Burslem and Hanley. It thrived until the 1920s, when road competition began to take its toll. Final closure to passenger traffic occurred on 2nd March 1964, though freight traffic continued on some sections of the route until 1976.
