NS3778 : Circular feature on Carman Muir

Circular feature on Carman Muir
Circular feature on Carman Muir
(This picture does not show the "possible hut circle", more probably an animal enclosure, that is referred to in the end-note, but much of the discussion below does relate to that feature.)

The location of the enclosure itself is in the right background of the present picture, but it is not apparent from here. It is not easy to depict photographically even from near at hand, but see NS3678 : Round enclosure on Carman Muir for its main description.

The round enclosure is not apparent in satellite imagery either, but a green, almost-round feature that could easily be confused with it is located only a few metres away, and does stand out clearly in satellite views. That green feature is the one shown in the foreground of the present picture.

It is certainly not very recent: it appears continuously on satellite imagery from mid-2002 (which is the earliest set I could access). On the other hand, it may not be of any archaeological significance; for all I know, it may simply be the result of something round and heavy having been set here in recent times.

Much of its perimeter is well defined (particularly the near and left parts in this view). It is unlike the nearby round enclosure in at least two respects: its inside is no lower than, and is noticeably greener than, the muir outside.

At any rate, it seemed worth recording this feature, partly for interest, but also to distinguish it from the round enclosure nearby.

A low, indistinct, circular bank, about 14 metres in diameter, outlines this feature, which is difficult to pick out on the ground. It was originally reported as a hut circle, but a later opinion (see comments from 2014 in LinkExternal link at WoSAS) is that it had probably been an animal enclosure. See LinkExternal link for a satellite view centred on this feature (which is, depending on the date of the images, either invisible or barely visible in satellite imagery).
