Smeaton's Tower
Smeaton's Tower
The third Eddystone Lighthouse. The first was washed away in storm with its designer in it! The second burnt down but the keepers were rescued. Smeaton's Tower (this one) is made of dovetailed jointed stone, each piece crafted by hand and the taken out to the Eddystone Rocks by rowing boat. It was only dismantled and brought ashore as the rock it was standing began to erode. Its stub can still be seen next to the modern Eddystone Lighthouse.
