The Esk below Glaisdale
The Esk below Glaisdale
Below Glaisdale the Esk runs through a deep wooded valley for about a mile before breaking out into a wider valley around Egton Bridge. Eskdale is quite unlike the dales running south from the central moors as the valley bottom is rarely flat and there are several sections of small gorges along the river. Much of this landscape has seen erosion and deposition by ice with North Sea Ice creeping up valley from Whitby and another tongue heading into the upper dale at Kildale, thus altering the topography and drainage patterns.
