The RNLI Queensferry inshore boat being brought ashore after a May Bank Holiday outing. This one, ‘Jimmie Cairncross’ B-851, is an Atlantic 85 RIB, one of a large fleet of powerful inshore rescue boats around the UK. They are 8.4 m long and powered by two 86 kW Yamaha four-stroke engines, with a max speed of 35 kt. It has a crew of 4, and a capacity of 24.
The boat is named after Jimmie Cairncross, a Perth jeweller who died in 2002, who established the Jimmie Cairncross Charitable Trust which contributed to the acquisition of the lifeboat. His business was, and is still, particularly associated with pearls from the freshwater mussels that live in Scottish rivers.
