The 500-seat Empire Cinema on Church Street was opened in September 1928. It was upgraded to show CinemaScope films in 1956 and closed in May 1963; the last film shown there was "Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation", an American comedy from 1962 starring James Stewart and Maureen O'Hara.
The building subsequently served for many years as a car showroom, with its Art Deco frontage being preserved. It reopened as a gym in 2014 with the name being chosen to reflect the building's original function.
