NU0842 : The Pilgrims way to Holy Island

taken 10 years ago, near to Beal, Northumberland, England

The Pilgrims way to Holy Island
The Pilgrims way to Holy Island
A long line of tall posts in the sand mark a relatively safe (but wet underfoot) route crossing Holy Island Sands between the mainland and Holy Island. The wooden refuge box visible here provides a means of escape from rising water for pilgrims who have misjudged their timing of the crossing. The route is only passable for a couple of hours either side of low tide and is more risky than the main causeway road used by traffic to the north.
