Wall across Tag Lock
This wall has been built between the ends of the two stone walls that enclosed the lock. It forms a dam to retain standing water in the cut. The stream flow in the cut comes through an aperture in the wall.
Tag Cut, Elland
The Tag Cut was part of the original Calder and Hebble Navigation, which used the River Calder upstream and downstream of the cut, which bypassed a loop in the river and a weir. It became redundant when the long Freeman's Cut was constructed, in 1805-8, between the (Brighouse) North Cut at Freeman's Lock and Salterhebble. It is now dammed by a wall across Tag Lock, at the downstream end, and carries a small stream flow. It is in the Cromwell Bottom Local Nature Reserve.
