Built in 1878 for the Northern Assurance Company. The style is (Italian) Palladian: the tall ground floor is surmounted by serpentine balconies that weave in and out. Giant half-fluted pilasters separate alternate pointed and curved headed windows, up to a heavy cornice with the Northern Assurance name and establishment date (1836) below. Above is a red-tiled mansard roof with heavy stone dormer windows. The building is Grade II listed Link .
Newcastle's 'new' co-op was built on Newgate Street in 1932. Although 'art decor' in style, it gave more than a nod to Egypt where Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb had just taken place. See http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/newcastle_co-op.htm
