SK9390 : Gargoyle, All Saints' church, Hemswell
taken 9 years ago, near to Hemswell, Lincolnshire, England
Grade II* listed.
The church dates from the early 13th century onwards with major rebuilding in the 18th century.
There is a west tower, nave with north aisle, north porch, and chancel.
The tower was built in 1764, there is a plaque with the date of 1754 which is when the mediaeval south aisle was removed and the old tower demolished. At the top of the tower is a parapet with pinnacles and gargoyles, possibly the original ones.
Most of the rest of the church was rebuilt in 1858, probably by Henry Goddard.
The nave has early 13th century north arcade of three bays, and there is a late 13th century sedilia in the south of the chancel.
The font is 13th C. on a 19th-century base, it was repaired in 1865, and bears the arms of the Monson family.
The organ is by Forster and Andrews, 1871 on a purpose-built west gallery.
