Grave of a historian, Chapel Stile
The unassuming headstone R of centre marks the burial place of the historian, academic and champion of the outdoors George Macaulay Trevelyan. He became Master of Trinity College Cambridge and Chancellor of the University of Durham and was instrumental in the formation of the Youth Hostels Association and very active in the National Trust. Trevelyan's personal connection to the Lake District began in the late 19th century on visits to take part in reading parties between long and strenuous walks. He bought a cottage in Langdale before the First World War, and this remained in the family for many years following his death in 1962.
The headstone also commemorates his first-born son Theodore who died very young from appendicitis, and his wife Janet Penrose Trevelyan.
