Cave Painting of Christ on the Cross, Davaar Island.
Cave Painting of Christ on the Cross, Davaar Island.
This picture shows the latest and very recent version of the painting. Sometime during August last year the painting was defaced by a person or persons unknown. An image of Che Guevara was stencilled over the painting in red spray paint. The painting was originally created, in secret, by a local man Archibald MacKinnan in 1887. The painting has been restored several times since then, each time being slightly changed or added to. The first was by MacKinnan himself in 1902 and then again in 1934. The next restoration came in 1955 at the hands of John McInally. It was then restored again sometime in the 1960s by Ronald Togneri who also painted the latest version above.
