TQ3280 : Mansion House Station

This is 1 of 3 images, with title Mansion House Station in this square

Mansion House Station
The station was opened by the Metropolitan District Railway in 1871 and acted as the terminus of the route from west London until the line was extended eastwards in 1884. Mansion House retains three platforms from its days as the terminus of the line - although trains are sometimes still terminated here, currently Tower Hill is more normally used as a terminus. This view looking west along the central track at shows an eastbound (Upminster) train approaching - (it will use the platform the other side of the brick wall on the right). It is difficult when viewing this image to comprehend that the station was originally open to the sky!
