Brother Percival on the Pilgrim's Rest bench alongside the Pilgrim's Way
The Pilgrim's Rest bench was unveiled in 2007 alongside the Pilgrim's Way near Harrietsham. Sadly Brother Percival has lost his nose.
A nearby map and information board shows how Harrietsham may have looked to the pilgrim, Brother Percival and the places he may have visited. It also interestingly explains that "Hearsay has it that young Pilgrims would marry and honeymoon in the old tower of the church, not being released until the bill was paid in full." It also says that Harrietsham was originally called 'Herriagerdeshamme' because of tranquil water meadows in the bottom of the valley. A photograph taken not long after the carving was placed here and before any vandalism had taken place can be seen at Link
The Pilgrim's Way is also followed here by the North Downs Way.
