30 Grainger Street, NE1
Built 1884-6 by John Johnstone for the Newcastle and Gateshead Gas Company. This was the last property to be built in the (then) new Grainger Street, and occupies a prominent open corner next to NZ2464 : The Church of St. John the Baptist, Grainger Street, NE1. It's a metal-framed structure clad in authentic French chateau fashion. The ground floor is arcaded with curved-headed windows, there are shallow bay windows with balconies in the centre of each face, and an elaborate rounded corner bay rises from a finely curved bracket up to a drum, open dome and finial. The roof is a flamboyant mixture of turrets, pediments and pavilions with rich green Westmoreland slates NZ2464 : 30 Grainger Street, NE1 (detail). The building is Grade II listed LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) .
