NZ2463 : Norwich Union House, Westgate Road, NE1

Norwich Union House, Westgate Road, NE1
This relatively modest late 1960s building, in traditional sandstone standing on an arcade of brutally plain pillars, was dwarfed by the 12-storey slab block of Westgate House alongside - part of which can be seen in NZ2463 : Westgate House (photographed by Peter McDermott). Pevsner says that these two buildings were "unspeakably ugly and intrusive". Thankfully, both have now been demolished. Had they still been standing, they would definitely have been worthy of inclusion in the canon of Newcastle's Masterpieces of Modern Architecture Link .
