The Tyne Theatre and Opera House, Westgate Road, NE1
Built in 1867, by W B Parnell for Joseph Cowen - see NZ2464 : Statue of Joseph Cowen, Westgate Road / Finkle Street, NE1 - as a rival to NZ2464 : The Theatre Royal, Grey Street / Shakespeare Street, NE1, then around 30 years old. The front is of white bricks with sandstone dressings and decorations in the Italian style. Darker bricks were used to outline the grand windows, reinforce the upper cornice, and create decorative panels below the stone finials on the top floor. The later canopy somewhat reduces the effect of the six giant pilasters between ground and first floors.
The theatre was bought by Oswald Stoll and became a cinema from 1919 to 1974. In 1977 it reopened as the New Tyne Theatre Link
.
The building is Grade I listed Link
.
