The copy of the definitive map in Halifax Library is printed from a tracing, and the line of this path does not look to be accurate as it crosses over the field boundary in places. Here I think that the path really does cross the boundary and go through the gate, as a route inside the fence line would be impossible. Another fence has been erected so that the path is enclosed.
