Houghall Pond
Houghall Pond
A relic of an old course of the River Wear. Historically the river has meandered about the flood plain. Ponds were left as the river changed its course. This pond was recorded in the 16c when monks living at Houghall used it as a fish pond. Eventually vegetation would take over and the pond would silt up. Modern constraints of the river prevents this cycle happening so this pond has to be maintained to prevent this happening.
