A tablet outside the Burghley Arms in the town centre reminds us that this was the birthplace of the illustrious statesman William Cecil (1520-98), a pillar of state for forty years, trusted adviser to Queen Elizabeth I and the first Lord Burghley (aka Burleigh), yet he does not merit a blue plaque from English Heritage and is remembered only by this modest inscription placed there by the local council in 1955.
