Walsall first appears in documents in 1002 as 'Walesho' - Walh being the Saxon word for a Welshman and Healh sheltered place. It does not seem to appear in Domesday Book as, just as with a number of other places, it was either missed or was included with another area or areas and did not appear as a separate entity in its own right. The railway arrived here in 1847. The town has been the birthplace of a number of celebrities, including Jerome K Jerome, author of Three Men In A Boat, The Idle Thoughts Of An Idle Fellow and Novel Notes, he is buried at Ewelme, Oxfordshire SU 6491 and more recently Noddy Holder of the group Slade. On 10th October 1847 there was a gas explosion in the town which killed one person and blew out the west window of St Matthew's Church. It was and still is a centre of the leather industry - this being reflected in the name of the shopping precinct the Saddlers Centre. Time taken 2.26 pm BST (British Summer Time).
