James Gavin Monument, Main Street
Monument to a local tailor who suffered for refusing to renounce his Presbyterian principles during the period that came to be known by the Covenanters as "The Killing Time". The lintel from the door of his ruined cottage, which stood here until 1968, is incorporated in the monument.
The plaque relates that:
"On this site dwelt James Gavin, tailor, hero of the Covenant. He incurred the special enmity of Claverhouse, who wantonly severed the ears from his head with Gavin's own shears, about the year 1684. To commemorate and perpetuate the brutal outrage Gavin carved the stone that is set into this cairn, and put it above the door of the house erected by him on this site, years after his return from banishment to the island of Barbadoes."
