Old Stone House, Judges Terrace, East Grinstead
Grade II* Listed Old Stone House dated by dendrochronology to 1641 and its neighbour Clarendon House built about 1485 were used up to the beginning of the 19th century by Judges holding Winter Assizes in Sussex including, according to local legend, the notorious Judge Jeffries. The right hand section of the building was refaced in the 19th century and the fake timber frame and plaster added. In front of the building punishments were often carried out from whipping and hangings, to the burning at the stake of the East Grinstead Martyrs during the reign of Queen Mary.
